Royal poinciana or Red Gulmohar (Delonix regia), strikingly beautiful flowering tree of the pea family (Fabaceae). It is native to Madagascar, and it has been widely planted in frost-free regions for its large scarlet to orange flowers and its shade. It is a rapid grower, attaining a height of 6 to 12 metres (20 to 40 feet) and bears compound leaves that reach 30 to 60 cm (1 to 2 feet) in length. The fruit is a flat woody legume, up to 60 cm (2 feet) long. It has been cultivated and colonised in several sub-tropical and tropical countries.

2. Cultural value : Gulmohar is considered sacred in Kerala. It is the city flower of Selangor and Malaysia.
3. The wood is used for fuel, the calorific value of the wood being 4600 kcal/kg.
4. Its flowers are used in producing bee forage.
5. Leaves have anti-diabetic properties, using its methanol extract significantly lowers the blood glucose levels.
6. Gulmohar has divergent medicinal properties like antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antimicrobial, antioxidant, cardio-protective, gastro-protective, and wound healing activity.
7. An essential oil obtained from the leaves has anti fungal properties.
